The first annual training retreat sponsored by the Barista Guild of America (BGA) for Level 1 and 2 certifications. Level 1 Certification included understanding the fundamentals of espresso, cupping, extraction, and customer service as set by the standards established by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA).
Certification requires a minimum score of 80% on both the written and practical exams. On this day, 73 out of 136 participants passed. More than 50% of certified level 1 baristas were certified at this event, making it significant.
This is a fun way to geek-out on coffee and get your certification at the same time!
Written tests evaluate your knowledge on things such as extraction time, pressure, volume; being able to identify parts of the grinder and espresso machine; and cupping techniques. The practical exam is divided into three timed parts: (1) preparation and extraction, (2) critique of the extracted espresso, and (3) serving of cappuccino according to specific SCAA guidelines.
